  • Abstract: The picturesque is not the sole preserve of the travel narrative. Le Capitaine Fracasse by T. Gautier should be considered a work of fiction built almost entirely on picturesque elements. The descriptions of monuments are numerous and detailed, asserting a clear desire to compete with painting. Amongst these many monuments described in a picturesque vein, the article focuses on the four castle settings that structure the novel and which Gautier treats in a way that competes with painting.
