Voyages pittoresques et romantiques : littérature et patrimoine dans la première moitié du xixe siècle

  • Abstract: Pilgrimages place to writers’ homes are closely linked with travellers’ passion for picturesque landscapes, monuments from the past and archictecture in general. At the beginning of the 19th century, this sensitivity to picturesque was nurtured by travel stories such as L’Hermite en province. In this narrative, Etienne de Jouy recounts his visit at Pierre Corneille’s birth house in Rouen, Normandy. This paper will draw from Jouy’s account and thoughts in order to examine whether the « picturesque » aspect of the monument and of the neighborhood should be a strong argument for the restoration and promotion of the monument.
