Montaigne, a reader of the Rabelaisian edition of Poliziano

Montaigne inherited the first volume of Poliziano’s Opera from La Boétie, which was published by Gryphius in 1550, in a re-edition of Rabelais’ editorial work of 1533. Did Montaigne read Poliziano? There is some evidence to suggest so, especially given his taste for poetic progress “by leaps and skips,” similar to Poliziano’s saltuatim et vellicatim style. Besides, “Des pouces” (II, 26) echoes the Italian’s Miscellany 42. Everything therefore suggests that Montaigne read Poliziano over Rabelais’ shoulder.
