By examining the critical work carried out on the Essais over the last fifty years, this article proposes to revisit the places held and the roles played by “fantasy” and “regulation” respectively in the discourse of the Montaignian essay. It will do so with regard, in particular, to one of its most defining features: irregularity, as well as to the relationship that this discourse maintains with truth.
