Transmarine campaigns by the “historical” Arthur
Trends in modern fiction

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Arthur, la mer et la guerre
  • Author: Wiseman (Howard)
  • Abstract: Many modern works of Arthurian fiction with an historical setting follow the medieval traditions by sending Arthur and his warriors beyond the shores of Britain. This article considers a corpus of 29 works, from 1898 to 2008, that meet my strict criteria for ‘Arthurian historical fiction’. Two clear trends emerge regarding transmarine Arthurian military activity: its prominence has greatly increased over time, and Geoffrey Ashe’s work has had a major influence.
