“Lyonesse”, the sea in the world of the “historical Arthur”

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Arthur, la mer et la guerre
  • Author: Esmonde-Cleary (Simon)
  • Abstract: The sources for the ‘historical Arthur’ concentrate on terrestrial events. But for the ‘Atlantic archipelago’ of Britain and Ireland with their associated islands sea transport was of the greatest importance. With the collapse of Roman rule, in the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the Channel saw much maritime activity. Some was bellicose. The period also saw major migrations. Arthur’s world was one where the sea was ever-present.
