  • Abstract: This paper considers how Roman and post-Roman Britain was attacked by surrounding peoples from the fourth to the fifth century. The question is to proceed as close as possible to the events which happened on the seas bordering the insular province. From which geographical and social horizon did the aggressors come? What were their means of transport and their navigation technologies? Did they resort to sea piracy? What kinds of reply did these events trigger from Rome and from the Brittonic chiefdoms which succeeded Roman rule in the former province?
